What should you ask a roofing contractor?

• Are you licensed and insured here? Can I see the paperwork?
• Will the estimate be in writing, with materials listed?
• Who handles permits, and who removes the old roofing?
• How will you protect my yard, pool and vehicles?
• How do you handle a surprise, like rotted decking?
• Can the schedule work around school runs and work hours?
• Do you help document damage if I file a claim?

Are you in control?

Yes, always. A conversation does not commit you to anything. You can compare more than one estimate, take time to think, or say no thanks. Costs vary by job, so get a written quote before you decide. Typical U.S. prices swing widely based on size, pitch and materials.

What about urgent problems?

If water is coming in, say so right away. Many providers can respond quickly, though availability varies. For emergency roof repair, a tarp or temporary fix may come first, with a full plan later.
